The National Road Safety Authority in collaboration with the National Insurance Commission (NIC) and the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) has begun an intense road enforcement campaign in Cape Coast.
The enforcement campaign is to promote safety on the Cape Coast roads during the 2022 Oguaa Fetu Afahye.
Speaking on Atlantic wave on ATLFM, the Assistant planning manager of the National Road Safety Authority in the Central Region, Kwame Tenkorang Osei says the surge in road triggers this road enforcement measure crashes in the Central Region which is claiming more lives.
He said although his outfit is putting in enforcement mechanisms to curb the escalating road accidents, road users who are caught in the act, breaking any of the country’s road regulations will be made to face the law.
He said “per our new mandate we have a new sticker that says that if you do not put on your seat belt, you will be made to pay a fine fee of between 150-300 Ghana Cedis or 30-days imprisonment and road safety”
“We have been telling people that we are not interested in the fines. We are tired of the calls for crushes during earlier days where we will go and see horrible things, so, you have to make sure you put on your seat belt.” He continued.
He further urged drivers to ensure they have at least two warning triangles in their car for use when needed.
He said the fight against road accidents is a shared responsibility by all road users, not the NRSA alone, and therefore called for a collaborative effort to mitigate this menace.
To him, it is time individuals change their concept about ways of seeing things and stakeholders such as the DVLA, Road Safety, Police MTTD, the Urban and feeder roads must also help in curbing road accidents”
