A Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Kwame Asah Asante has called on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to with immediate effect do soul searching and put measures in place to maintain unity in the party.
His comment comes at the back of recent moving out of key personalities from the party’s presidential race.
Recent is the withdrawal of former Trade Minister and Presidential Aspirant of the New Patriotic Party, Alan John Kwadwo Kyeremateng from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential race.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 6 to announce his withdrawal from the presidential race, Mr Kyeremanten cited various reasons such as the level of intimidation of varying intensity, directly and indirectly, unleashed on a significant number of delegates at various voting centres across the sixteen regions.
To him that is unprecedented in the history of the Party.
A portion of the statement read “In addition, the fact that my Polling Agent in the North East region has suffered severe damage to his eyesight, arising from his bold and courageous effort to ensure compliance with the very rules and regulations for the conduct of the elections as approved by the Presidential Elections Committee, will forever remain a dark spot in the history of internal elections within the Party.
This incident and various acts of violence and collusion, reported in other voting centres, are appalling, unconscionable, and despicable.
I am committed to, and value the safety of those who work with me and for me, and I will always fight for their interest”.
According to him, statements made by some leading members of the party made it clear to him that a favourite had already been chosen and there was nothing he could do about it.
Meanwhile, speaking in an interview with Accra-based TV3, Dr Asante described the recent development as sad and worrying.
“It’s a very sad situation and it’s a big indictment on the Party” he emphasized.
As such, he is calling on the party to do soul-search and right the wrongs to maintain unity in the party.
“The Party should do soul searching and see what is wrong because you can’t have giants like Boakye Ayarko, Alan Kyeremateng moving out of a competition such as this. Something that they dream for over the years; it tells you that there’s something wrong” he continued.
Dr Asante opined that unity in the party must be maintained to avoid any problems in the 2024 elections.
