The Minority Caucus of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Parliament is speaking out strongly against a petition seeking the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo.
The caucus has condemned the move, calling it a direct attack on the independence of the judiciary.
At a press conference held yesterday at Parliament House, the Legal Counsel to the Minority Caucus, Mr. John Darko, dismissed the petition’s claims as flimsy and politically driven.
Among the allegations are accusations that the Chief Justice advised the President on judicial promotions and presided over a controversial case.
Mr. Darko, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Suame in the Ashanti Region, warned that the petition aims to tarnish the image of the Chief Justice and manipulate the judiciary for political gain.
Drawing a historical comparison, Mr. Darko referenced the tragic events of June 30, 1982, when three senior judges were abducted and murdered, a chilling reminder, he said, of the dangers of judicial interference.
He is calling on traditional and religious leaders, as well as the broader Ghanaian public, to speak out.
““To our revered traditional leaders and religious leaders, the time to call the President to advise him is now, the time to pray for our country is now. You, the people of Ghana, are the fountain from which justice flows… You are the one who must rise up and say enough,” he emphasized.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has adjourned the case on the Chief Justice’s removal to May 6.
