The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has contributed GH100,000 to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) for breast cancer patients to be treated at the National Radiotherapy Oncology and Nuclear Medicine Centre.
Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, the NPA Chief Executive Officer who presented the cheque, said that the contribution was part of the NPA Ladies Association’s actions to commemorate October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
He said that at the beginning of the cancer awareness campaign, the Authority invited specialists from the National Radiotherapy Oncology and Nuclear Medicine Centre to train its workers about breast and cervical cancer.
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the NPA organized breast screenings and wellness walks for its employees around the country.
The NPA CEO pledged the Authority’s support for extra financial assistance to help the center deliver exceptional treatment to needy breast cancer patients.
Dr. Verna Vanderpuje, Deputy Director and Consultant Oncologist at the Centre, praised the NPA and said that this was the first time the Centre has received such a large monetary gift to assist patient care.
She said that it would go a long way toward assisting patients’ therapy and requested further funds, which she stated was vital to assisting patients in properly completing their treatment processes.
According to Dr. Vanderpuje, due to the high cost of cancer treatment, most patients stop their sessions halfway and only return to the hospital after their condition has worsened beyond the scope of possible intervention.
This often resulted in high mortality, she added, and she urged private sector organizations and people to help the Centre care for the rising number of needy patients.
