The Labour Division of the Accra High Court has issued an interlocutory injunction against the University Teachers Association of Ghana’s (UTAG) strike.
This comes in response to the National Labour Commission’s (NLC) request for an interlocutory injunction to halt UTAG’s strike.
UTAG has been on strike since January 10, 2022, in order to demand better working conditions.
The NLC took UTAG to court after attempts to persuade UTAG to call off its strike were unsuccessful.
The court ordered both parties to reach an out-of-court settlement on two occasions, but the engagements ended inconclusively.
On Tuesday, February 15, the NLC’s legal team asked the court for an interlocutory injunction against UTAG’s action before the hearing of its substantive case seeking enforcement of its order to UTAG to end its strike.
Meanwhile, Kwasi Keli-Delataa, a lawyer for UTAG, objected to the motion and pleaded with the court to deal with the substantive matter before it.
However, in his ruling, His Lordship Rockson Aboadwe stated that if the strike continues, negotiations between both parties will fail to produce the desired results, and thus granted the injunction.
As a result, the proceedings have been postponed until February 22, 2022, at 1:30pm.
In an interview following the hearing, the Executive Secretary of the National Labour Commission, Ofosu Asamoah, urged UTAG to return to the negotiating table for an amicable resolution of its grievances.
