The government’s flagship poultry revitalisation programme, the Nkoko Nkitinkiti Initiative, aims to distribute three million poultry birds at the doorsteps of households across the country.
Under the first phase of the rollout, each registered beneficiary will receive 50 birds, feed support and technical guidance at the start of their poultry business to ensure the sustainability and survival of the initial flock.
Speaking at the launch on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, in Kumasi, President Mahama said the initiative is a key component of the broader Feed Ghana Programme, designed to guarantee food sovereignty and shared prosperity.
“It is with pride and a deep sense of national duty that I stand before you in this historic city of Kumasi, the birthplace of enterprise and innovation, to launch a programme that addresses the core of our national food security and inclusive growth agenda, the Nkoko Nkitinkiti Household and Backyard Poultry Production Initiative,” he said.
He noted that the programme is designed to address Ghana’s heavy reliance on imported chicken, which has cost the country over $350 million in foreign exchange in 2023 alone.
The goal is to raise the country’s poultry self-sufficiency level from the current 12% to over 75% by 2028.
The Nkoko Nkitinkiti Initiative is being scaled up following a successful pilot programme in 13 districts that benefited 13,000 farmers.
The initiative will ensure 10,000 birds are allocated to each of the 276 constituencies, enabling the distribution of three million birds and supporting around 60,000 households across the nation.
