Nine University of Education, Winneba students have been confirmed deceased, with numerous others wounded, following an accident on Sunday, 13th March, 2022.
A Hyundai Universe commercial bus was involved in the collision, which happened on the Accra-Kumasi route in Asuboi, a Suhum suburb.
The tragedy occurred when the bus they were on from Sunyani to Accra collided with a stationary articulated truck.
The driver of the bus with the registration number AK324-22 is said to have violated traffic laws because he was asleep.
The impact of the crash caused a 40-footer truck filled with wood to fall onto the road, killing eight students instantly.
DSP Ebenezer Tetteh, the Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, stated that the police had initiated an inquiry into the incident.
The deceased, according to him, have been deposited at the Suhum Government Hospital mortuary, while the injured are being treated at the same facility.
“On-the-spot investigations at the section of the accident spot at Asuboi on the Accra-Kumasi dual carriage road, indicated that the driver of the said commercial bus failed to observe traffic ahead whilst he was allegedly sleeping.
“In the process, he crashed into a 40-footer container loaded with wood which fell partially on the road as a result of a previous accident. The passengers who sustained the injuries have been transported to the Suhum Government Hospital and are receiving treatment whilst the dead have been deposited at the Suhum Government Hospital morgue awaiting autopsy,” he told JoyNews in an interview.
