The National Insurance Commission (NIC) has held a day’s seminar for Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate officers across the country to equip them with the requisite knowledge on effective use of the motor insurance database system.
The NIC estimates that about 40 percent of vehicles on the roads are either not insured or are having faked insurance, hence the introduction of the Motor Insurance Database in January this year to check the practice.
The Public Relations Officer of the NIC, Mawuli Zogbenoo stated that with the introduction of the Motor Insurance Database, it is expected that insurance companies will be in a better positon to pay genuine claims promptly to a claimer.

An officer of the Ghana Police Service in charge of operation, project and programmes of the MTTD, Supt. Dr. Samuel Sasu-Mensah on his part mentioned that the agency will partner with relevant stakeholders in enforcing this new development.
“The task force will be operating in all the 16 regions; it will consist of personnel from MTTD, NIC and other relevant stakeholders. In each region, the operations of the task force will be led by the Regional MTTD Commander and it will work within the normal police chain of administration. Its functions will surely be dedicated to the detection of fake insurance certificates through the motor insurance database, “he explained.
The National Insurance Commission, NIC, has vowed to clamp down on persons still engaged in the production of fake Motor Insurance stickers. The Commission says these activities do not only violate its laws, but also put the lives of motorists and other persons at risk.
This year, the Commission has caused the arrests of a number of people issuing fake motor insurance stickers. These include the arrest of the Insurance Agent, 72-year old Nana Kodua Marfoh for submitting fake documents to the Kumasi Area Office of the National Insurance Commission (NIC).
Two Agents of MILLENNIUM INSURANCE COMPANY LIMITED have also been arrested for possessing fake ALLIANZ INSURANCE sticker booklets also at the premises of the same Kumasi DVLA Office.
Currently, a total of 333,467 newly issued electronic stickers have been already captured on the MID portal since its implementation in January this year.
