The National Identification Authority (NIA) has announced plans to integrate student identification systems with the Ghana Card, allowing students to use the national ID in place of traditional institutional ID cards.
Speaking in an interview with Asempa FM yesterday, the Executive Secretary of NIA, Wisdom Yayra Koku, said the Ghana Card already serves multiple functions, including Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN), Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), and National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) numbers.
“We are making preparations to roll out an integration process which will combine all the numbers onto the Ghana Card,” Mr. Koku explained.
He noted that once the system is adopted and implemented, students will no longer need separate school ID cards, as the Ghana Card will serve as their official identification.
“This will improve portability and convenience for cardholders, while also reducing the cost government incurs in printing additional cards,” Mr. Koku emphasized.
The NIA believes the initiative will streamline identification processes, enhance efficiency, and strengthen the Ghana Card’s role as a single-source identity document for Ghanaians.
