The National Identification Authority (NIA) has taken a major step toward resolving the backlog of unprinted Ghana Cards by securing 700,000 blank cards.
However, a significant challenge remains—more than 600,000 printed Ghana Cards have been left unclaimed at NIA offices nationwide since 2018.
In a press statement dated February 18, 2025, the NIA confirmed that the newly acquired blank cards will be used to print pending applications, including first-time issuances, replacements, and updates to personal details.
To accelerate the process, the Acting Executive Secretary has assembled a technical team tasked with fast-tracking printing and ensuring timely distribution to district offices for collection.
Thousands of Unclaimed Cards Still at NIA Offices
While efforts to clear the backlog are underway, the NIA is urging the public to collect their already printed Ghana Cards.
These cards, which have been sitting idle for years, are crucial for identification and access to essential services such as banking, healthcare, and voter registration.

“The NIA is working on an efficient system to ensure the distribution of unclaimed cards, but we also encourage applicants to visit their respective district offices to pick up their cards,” the statement read.
Despite the push for mass registration and increased public awareness, the high number of uncollected cards raises concerns about accessibility, public engagement, and the efficiency of the collection process.
Ghana Card’s Growing Importance
The Ghana Card has become a vital document, serving as the primary form of national identification for Ghanaians aged 15 and above.
It is required for multiple transactions, including SIM card registration, banking, and accessing government services.
As the NIA continues its efforts to clear pending applications, stakeholders are calling for improved communication and collection mechanisms to reduce delays and ensure that all registered citizens receive their cards without further challenges.
