The National Identification Authority (NIA) has begun registering Ghanaian children aged 6 to 14 years at its Premium Centres nationwide, in what it describes as a major step towards building a comprehensive National Identity Register.
In a press release dated September 10, 2025, the Authority said the registration is in line with its legal mandate to provide every Ghanaian with a secure and verifiable national identity. “This marks another step forward in building a comprehensive and inclusive National Identity Register that captures every Ghanaian from childhood,” the statement read.
The cost for first-time registration at Premium Centres has been set at GH₵310, the same amount charged for applicants aged 15 years and above. Parents or guardians are required to present one of three documents: a valid Ghanaian passport, the child’s birth certificate, or verification from a Ghana Card holder parent or guardian.
The Authority also announced the expansion of its online registration and booking system to cover all 11 Premium Centres from September 15, 2025, to improve convenience.
“Applicants are encouraged to make use of the online appointment booking system to ensure a smooth and timely process,” said Williams Ampomah E. Darlas, Head of Corporate Affairs at NIA.
The NIA assured parents that the issuance of Ghana Cards for children who complete the process will be communicated in due course. It also plans to extend registration for children to all district offices nationwide in the coming weeks.
