The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has disbursed Gh¢180 million to healthcare providers nationwide.
The payout largely covers claims submitted and verified through December 2023.
A statement signed and published by NHIA’s Acting Chief Executive, Dr Da Costa Aboagye, on March 26, 2024, said that the payment was part of the authority’s mission as a payer of healthcare services in Ghana, as described in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) benefits package.
The NHIS benefit package, he continued, covers more than 95 percent of disease conditions and includes over 550 formulations on the NHIS medications list, assuring full treatment for all ailments covered by the plan.

Dr. Aboagye reaffirmed NHIS’ commitment to provide quality healthcare to all of its subscribers, assuring stakeholders of prompt payments within the recognized 90-day window for validated claims.
“With this payment, the NHIS is on track and not in arrears as to stays within the accepted 90-day window for the payment of vetted Claims” , he went on to say.
According to him, the NHIA provided healthcare providers credentials to offer services to NHIS members and required them to conform with the NHIS drugs list and service rate, or face penalty.
“As a result of recent economic conditions, the NHIA in collaboration with the Ghana Health Service, Christian Health Association of Ghana, and other stakeholders is comprehensively reviewing the NHIS Medicines Tariffs for appropriate adjustments to be considered” , the doctor said.
To combat unlawful fees and extortion faced by NHIS members at specific healthcare institutions, he stated that the NHIA, in collaboration with key partners, intended to increase public education, promote members’ entitlements, and involve communities to improve knowledge and ownership of the NHIS.
He advised members to report cases of unlawful charges or extortion to their local NHIS District Offices so that such activities can be successfully combated.
