Rail transport in Ghana is set for a major boost as operations officially begin on the 99-kilometer Tema–Mpakadan Railway Line on October 1, 2025.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA), Dr. Frederick Appoh, said the project marks a significant step in reviving rail transport while supporting the Ghana–Burkina Faso Railway Interconnectivity Project.
The line, which links Tema to Mpakadan, is expected to facilitate domestic freight movement by integrating rail services with Volta Lake transport for onward movement of goods to northern Ghana and Burkina Faso. This, according to officials, will help establish a multimodal transportation network involving road, rail, and water.
Speaking in an interview with TV3, Dr. Appoh announced that services will initially focus on two routes, explaining that “From Afienya to Tema, we will have up to five stations. We will also run services from Tema Harbour back to Afienya, and another train will move from Afienya to Adome. We have two DMUs (Diesel Multiple Units) that will be operating from October 1.”
He revealed that additional trains will be procured to expand services in the coming days, adding that seven stations have already been constructed along the line to improve passenger convenience.
The trains will operate at 45-minute intervals during peak hours, from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and again from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
“We are committed to making rail transport accessible, reliable, and efficient. This is just the beginning of Ghana’s rail revival,” Dr. Appoh added.
The Tema–Mpakadan line is seen as a critical component in modernizing Ghana’s transport system and strengthening trade links with neighboring Burkina Faso.
