The second phase of the #BringBackGNBank national tour has kicked off in northern Ghana, with a strong call for the government to reinstate the bank’s license.
Led by Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, Chairman of Groupe Nduom, the tour aims to visit all 300 GN Bank branches across the 16 regions, following the first phase that covered six regions, including Eastern, Western, and Ashanti.
In an interview with Today Newspaper, Dr. Nduom described the campaign as a national journey for local economic development, noting that the tour serves to reintroduce the bank’s services to the public and to emphasize the importance of supporting indigenous financial institutions.
The tour will include stops in Wa, Bolgatanga, Walewale, Karaga, Tamale, and Sunyani, where Dr. Nduom plans to engage directly with the local communities, particularly market women and men who were among the bank’s primary customers.
Reflecting on the 2018/19 tour, Dr. Nduom recalled the withdrawal of GN Bank’s license by the central bank, which he believes negatively impacted the local economy, especially small to medium businesses.
Stressing that foreign-owned banks and “High Street” banks cannot fill the gap left by indigenous institutions, Dr. Nduom noted that the current tour aims to highlight the commitment of GN Bank’s shareholders to reviving the bank and restoring its vital role in the economy.
He urged the government to urgently pay the debts owed to Groupe Nduom companies, which he argues would have prevented the bank from being declared insolvent.
“We are calling on the Akufo-Addo Administration to lift the embargo on payments to Groupe Nduom companies,” Dr. Nduom stated, emphasizing that the debt has ballooned to over 7.1 billion Ghana cedis.
He also mentioned that while the focus of the tour is on GN Bank, it also serves to showcase the wide range of goods and services offered by Groupe Nduom, a committed stakeholder in Ghana’s economy.
