A nationwide demonstration organized by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in protest against the Electoral Commission (EC) turned violent in Kumasi after police clashed with protesters at the Commission’s regional office.
The unrest began when the police prevented an agitated crowd from joining NDC executives, who were trying to present their petition to the Ashanti Regional EC boss as part of the Enough Is Enough protest.
According to reports, the situation quickly escalated into a scuffle, resulting in broken barricades and shattered glass doors.
Amid the chaos, which included gunshots, a policewoman was reportedly injured and three others were arrested. Luv FM’s Nana Boakye Yiadom described the scene to JoyNews, saying, “I was finding a place to hide myself when I heard the shots. Then I got inside and realized that one man had also been arrested.”
As tensions remain high, some NDC executives are meeting with the commissioner inside the building, while supporters outside chant and demand access to the facility.
In response, the police have denied any shooting incidents at the Kumasi EC office, asserting that “no demonstrator has been injured by the police.”
They also clarified that demonstrators who breached the agreed arrangement by forcing their way into the EC office compound were restrained.
