Following a fierce battle to win the Assin North parliamentary seat, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Candidate, James Gyakye Quayson has emerged victorious in the just ended parliamentary primaries.

In a declaration made by the Official of the Electoral Commission, Mr. James Gyakye Quayson who is returning to parliament polled 17, 243 out of the 30, 418 total valid votes representing 57.56%.

Meanwhile, his main contender, Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) managed to secure 12,630 votes representing 42.15% of the valid votes cast while the candidate for the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Bernice Enyonam Sefenu polled 87 votes also representing 0.29%.

The Assin North seat became vacant after the Supreme Court of Ghana on Wednesday, May 17, unanimously declared as unconstitutional the election of James Gyakye Quayson as MP for the area in the 2020 elections.

The highly anticipated by-election brought several big-wigs of both the NDC and the NPP to campaign to sway voters to their side in order to add up or maintain their seat in parliament.

The turnout of 74.23% has been described by the officials of the Electoral Commission, Election Observers and many Ghanaians as very high comparing to the previous by-elections which has been conducted.

Per the Electoral Commission’s certified results, the total votes cast stood at 30, 418, while the total valid votes cast was 29,962 and rejected votes 456.

Meanwhile, the winner of the Assin North by-elections, Mr. James Gyakye Quayson has expressed joy over his victory, describing it as a victory not for him as a person but for the entire Assin North and the entire country.
