The Director of Elections and IT of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Tanko Rashid-Computer, has urged the National Peace Council to play a role in ensuring a peaceful electoral process in the upcoming Akwatia by-election.
His call comes after the National Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, raised concerns about what he described as inadequate security preparations for the polls.
In a Facebook post on August 31, Mr. Boakye alleged lapses in security arrangements, citing the reported absence of officers at a police checkpoint within the Akwatia enclave.
Speaking in an interview on JoyNews, Mr. Rashid-Computer dismissed the claims as misleading and without basis, clarifying that the cited checkpoint is located at Asamankese, outside the Akwatia constituency, and typically operates only at night due to security concerns along the stretch.
“Come to Akwatia and see, you will find several roadblocks and checkpoints. The claim is baseless,” he stated.
He further stressed that the NDC is fully prepared for the September 2 by-election, with its members adequately trained and its deployment strategy in place.
He, however, called on the National Peace Council to engage the NPP to help ease tensions ahead of the election.
“We are ready for a peaceful election. The Peace Council should rather engage them, because they are the ones creating unnecessary tension and impressions that don’t exist,” he said.
