The Central Regional Branch of the National Commission for Civic Education, (NCCE) says it is imperative for every Ghanaian to focus attention on the 1992 constitution document and fulfil the rights and responsibilities therein to promote constitutionalism.
According to the Deputy Regional Director, Madam Mercy Essien, per the mandate of the NCCE which is to educate the public, citizens should take advantage and voice out their opinions on the amendment of the constitution if any.
“And then when they come up with their issue that’s why we go out there to meet stakeholders, and identifiable groups, we ask them to come up with their own ideas as to which particular provision in the Constitution needs to be amended. And then based on that, we collect all this information and hand them over to the President,” she continued
She however said the 1992 Constitution is the fundamental law of the land until needed reforms are realized.
The Deputy Regional Director, NCCE Central Regional Office, Madam Mercy Essien made this statement in an interview on the ATLANTIC WAVE, while indicating the uniqueness of this period of constitutional democracy under the 4th republic.
Speaking on the 30th anniversary celebration of the NCCE, she said Ghana must celebrate and applaud herself as the country has lived for 30 years without military raids since it restored her democracy on 7th January 1993.
“And then also we have successfully returned the country to constitutional democracy, which we all bear witness to. There’s has been smooth transition from one party government to another,” she continued.
On his part, the Head of Programs, NCCE Central Regional Office, Michael Bart Addison, who explained the essence of NCCE’s 30 years anniversary celebration which was on the theme: “30 years of constitutional democracy under the 4th republic: prospect, challenges and the way forward” said the NCCE over the 30 years has ensured the increase of enlightenment within the Ghanaian population space.
He therefore urged all Ghanaians to look back to appreciate the reformation of the constitutional democracy.
