The National Commission for Civic Education through the launch of the 2024 Constitution Week celebration is calling on Ghanaian citizens to read, reflect and familiarise themselves with the Chapters and Articles of the constitution of Ghana.
The Constitution Week celebration is an annual celebration during which the commission engages the public in various ways and educates them on the need to sustain and safeguard Ghana’s democracy.
The launch took place at the Akwamuhene’s Palace in Kumasi on Saturday on the theme: “Together We Can Build Ghana So Get Involved.”
The event brought together stakeholders of the commission as well as officers from the Security Services, the Traditional and Religious Leaders, Students and Patrons of the commission’s Civic Education Clubs across the Ashanti Region.
In her address, the Chairperson of NCCE, Ms. Kathleen Addy explained the relevance of the celebration to Ghana’s constitutional democracy and what the Commission seeks to achieve with the celebration, charging all citizens to get a hard copy of the 1992 Constitution or download the 1992 Constitution of Ghana App.
“…I urge you to take it, yes, it’s a very difficult document to read but familiarize yourself with just the first few chapters,” She said.
Ms. Kathleen Addy also reiterated the significance of the theme for this year’s celebration especially because it is an election year and stressed that “this election year in particular it is so critical that we remember what brings us together and not what pulls us apart.”
Otumfuo Kumase Akwamuhene, Akyamfo Asafo Boakye Agyeman Bonsu expressed gratitude for hosting the launch and congratulated the Chair, staff and management of the NCCE for their hard work over the last 30 years.
He noted that the NCCE plays a critical role in Ghana’s constitutional democracy and gave assurance that the NCCE can count on the support from the Chieftaincy institution and Nananom to discharge its duties.
Otumfour Kumase Akwamuhene, Akyamfuo Asafo Boakye Agyeman Bonsu also encouraged citizens to participate in the national election exercise actively, stressing the need to use this year’s election to show proof as a country that believes in democracy.
