The National Communications Authority (NCA) has suspended the operations of nine radio stations across the country for various infractions, following the expiration of a 30-day grace period granted by President John Dramani Mahama.
In July, the President announced a regulatory amnesty, giving defaulting stations one month to address violations of Ghana’s FM radio broadcasting laws and regulations.
While many stations took steps to rectify breaches, the NCA said six stations “failed, refused, and neglected to comply” with the directive.
The affected stations include:
- Donplus Multimedia Limited (105.9MHz) – Ho
- Dreams Ghana Media Limited (104.9MHz) – New Abirem
- Jam Multimedia Limited (101.3MHz) – Kintampo
- Jewel Group Limited (102.7MHz) – Duayaw Nkwanta
- Kpandai Star Community Radio (107.3MHz) – Kpandai
- Unique Gateway Communication Limited (105.7MHz) – Nkawkaw
In addition, three other stations belonging to Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited were suspended for operating without a Certificate of Compliance, in breach of Regulation 54 of the Electronic Communications Regulations, 2011 (L.I. 1991). These include frequencies in Accra (95.9MHz), Kumasi (101.3MHz), and Takoradi (101.3MHz).
The infractions cited against some stations include the unauthorized use of Studio-to-Transmitter Link (STL) frequencies and the operation from unapproved transmitter locations.
In a statement, the NCA stressed that it “will continue to monitor the broadcasting space to ensure compliance with the relevant authorization conditions and the laws and regulations governing the operation of broadcasting services in Ghana.”
The Authority also urged all broadcasters to priorities adherence to regulatory requirements to avoid sanctions.
