According to Gideon Boako, a spokesman for Vice President, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has not broken his pledge to combat illegal mining, also known as galamsey.
His comment was in response to supporters of the social media movement #FixTheCountry’s concerns about the government’s mismanagement of different sectors of the economy.
“The battle against illegal mining is a process, not a one-time occurrence. You saw the President and his government’s dedication at the start of the fight against illegal mining (galamsey). It was waged up to a certain stage. People voiced their reservations.”
“People became dissatisfied with the allegations. The President’s term has been extended. The President has kept his promise and pledge. Mr. Boako said, “The President has shown an increasingly renewed determination to continue fighting it [illegal mining].”
According to the party, power outages, galamsey, unemployment, and poor healthcare systems demonstrate how various governments mismanaged the economy.
Mr. Boako, speaking on Eyewitness News, emphasized that while it is important for dissatisfied Ghanaians to share their dissatisfaction with the current economic hardships, they should also highlight the viable measures launched by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“People have faced a degree of adversity, although there is an understanding that the level of adversity is not the result of a single nation. It is a group effort. When we discuss these topics, it is often important that we take note of where we have come from and where we are now in order to get a proper understanding of the issues.”
“These are the national strengths, as well as the sacrifices we have made to alleviate people’s misery. We also want to note that when we are recounting our troubles, we have still chalked up some positive successes.”

‘We’ve been fixing Ghana’s problems
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President, also said in a Facebook post that the ruling NPP has been committed to enhancing Ghanaians’ living standards since taking power in 2017.
Mr. Bawumia said that, despite the fact that the COVID-19 pandemic had triggered price rises in goods such as oil, cement, and iron rods, the government’s output had been excellent.
“We have four months left of our [second] four-year mandate. The government’s task is to solve issues. This is something we’ve been doing since 2017. The COVID-19 pandemic has slowed the global economy and raised commodity costs such as oil, cement, and iron rods, as well as the total rate of shipping.”
“However, it is critical to document our government’s performance over the last four years since inheriting an economy with ‘no meat on the bone.’ Ours is a government that listens to and cares for its people. Dr. Bawumia said, “The evidence and data speak for themselves.”
