The president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo says his government is committed to improving the education sector in Ghana by upgrading and equipping the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
This, he says, will assist in equipping students with the technical and professional skills needed for socio-economic and industrial development.
To him, TVET is the right tool to help realize the country’s educational goal, adding that his government is on course of refurbishing the National Vocational and Technical Institutes (NVTI) nationwide.
“Within the next few months, the construction of five (5) technical colleges will begin in various parts of the country. Three technical institutes will be upgraded to tertiary status. The initial phase for the construction of nine (9) TVET campuses will commence next month in Bosomtwe, Akyem Awisa, Boako, Kenyasi, Patuda, Dambai, Larabanga, Guabuliga, and Tolibri. These campuses will have academic facilities, workshops, laboratories, hostels, and staff accommodation, and provide further access for training,” he revealed.
The president in his State of the Nation Address to Parliament on Wednesday 30th March 2022 said he is also determined to construct five (5) stem universities in the newly created regions.
“Government is in the process of securing financing for the construction of five (5) STEM universities in five (5) new Regions, that is Western North, Savannah, North East, Ahafo, and Oti regions. Steps are being taken to turn the planned Bunso campus of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development into a standalone, independent University focused on the study of Engineering. Construction of this campus is set to begin within the next three (3) months,” he said.
Road Infrastructure
President Akufo Addo said the road sector has registered the greatest infrastructure achievement than any government in the fourth republic with the construction of ten thousand, eight hundred and seventy-five (10, 875) kilometers of new roads.
But reacting to his assertion, Ranking Member on the Transport Committee of Parliament, Governs Kwame Agbodza said the president conjured the figures.
According to him, per the data on road projects from 2017 to 2021 by the road ministry, the total road projects constructed is four thousand two hundred (4,200) kilometers.
He noted that “out of that asphaltic overlay one thousand four hundred, sports improvement 139 kilometers. The total in this document published by the government is four thousand, two-hundred and thirty kilometers. (4,230) and this May 2021. If you read this document from the government which talks about four thousand and two-hundred kilometers and he stands in front of the people and he says he has constructed ten thousand kilometers, what word can you use to describe the president’s comment.”
