The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has urged the government to cancel the Domestic Debt Exchange Program.
Since reaching an agreement with the IMF at the staff level, the administration has been working with stakeholders to encourage them to sign up for the debt exchange program.
Some groups have been outspoken in their opposition to the DDEP, claiming that it would harm their livelihoods.
In an interview with Citi News, NAGRAT President Angel Carbonu asked the government to halt the domestic debt swap scheme and look for alternate ways to address the country’s economic issues.

“The DDEP shouldn’t have started at all, it’s a non-starter programme, the government should have looked for other innovative means to make up for its own balances. This DDEP thing is strange to our economic lexicon, now look at what is happening. Elderly citizens of this country who have sacrificed their lives are today those who are picketing at the Ministry of Finance. We will call on the government to abort the DDEP all together,” Mr. Carbonu appealed.
The Finance Minister is scheduled to appear before Parliament on Thursday, February 16, 2023, to brief the House on the DDEP.
