Former president of Ghana and the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has promised his commitment to stabilize Ghana’s economy if re-elected as president in the 2024 election.
Mr. Mahama said there must be an end to the decline of Ghana’s Economy.
To him, there must be a restoration and stability to the economy to enable Ghanaians to breathe a sigh of relief and not have their already inadequate incomes eroded further by inflationary pressures.
“It is important to note that we in the NDC will not be couching propaganda slogans and passing them off as policy, he continued.
During a manifesto presentation by the Trade Union Congress (TUC), the flagbearer of the NDC indicated his unwavering intent to implement practical economic policies geared at reducing public debt and addressing inflation.
He said the future NDC government will outline policies that will be implemented to stop the steep decline in the economy and set Ghana on the path to recovery.
Former President John Mahama pointed out the measures which include reducing the public debt by placing a moratorium on non-concessional borrowing, actively seeking concessional financing and grants and reviewing legislation to limit the non-core activities of some state-owned enterprises.
Others include pursuing bilateral and multilateral partners for more concessional financing and grants. Implementing self-financing infrastructure projects limits the Central Bank’s financing of government.
The NDC’s flagbearer also shared his position on governance and institutional reforms he intends to introduce to ensure that Ghana is reset and built into the country that all Ghanaians demand.
He said it is their aim to reduce the size and cost of government, tackle corruption, and enforce stricter financial management regulations and guidelines.
These include reducing the number of ministers and appointees, merging ministerial portfolios, discontinuing the payment of utility bills, fuel, DStv, et cetera, as part of top government employee service conditions among others.
Meanwhile, the Secretary-General of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Dr. Anthony Yaw Baah said the current public debt situation of Ghana is unsustainable and therefore called for collaboration among all stakeholders to work to reduce the public debt.
