The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, says recent efforts taken by the government to curtail the activities of illegal mining popularly known as ‘galamsey’ is paying off.
President Akufo-Addo said water bodies that were damaged during the peak of the menace are starting to reclaim their natural condition thanks to the resuscitated fight.
According to him, this is as a result of the hard work his administration has placed in the battle against the menace.
Speaking at the launch of the National Alternative Employment and Livelihood Programme for persons impacted by the clamp down on illegal mining, President Akufo-Addo reaffirmed that the government would continue to execute measures targeted at eradicating the menace.
He therefore promised the population that the government would not backtrack on this struggle for the improvement of the country’s water bodies.
“…These efforts have resulted in substantial advances with some of the waterbodies clearly cleaning up. Today, following continuous hard effort, we have attained a condition of pretty adequate rules of the small-scale mining sector.’
“Reforms of the Minerals Commission are underway, the Inspectorate Division has been despatched around the nation as the culture of impunity is becoming swiftly a thing of the past.”
Recently, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources renewed the campaign against the galamsey issue entitled #StopGalamseyNow.
The Ministry has put together a song to revive the campaign.
Despite the President’s assurances, illegal mining occurs in certain regions of the nation unabated.
