JMJ, real name Joshua Raphael, claims to have been raised in a Christian home and was trained in the church band, giving him the chance to pick up a variety of musical instruments.
Before making the switch to music production, JMJ began his career as a recording artist.
He claims that later on, he mastered the ability to write his own songs.
He told Joy FM’s entertainment writer Kwame Dadzie on Showbiz A-Z that it was his interaction with KK Duah and Appietus at Case Frequency that spawned his love in crafting beats than singing.

“I was a church boy so the music I wanted to do was gospel but I was a complete R&B boy. I loved Brian McKnight, name them,” he said.
He said he used to record foreign songs on cassettes, listen to Kofi Kum Bilson and Doreen Andoh perform them, and try to accompany them on the keyboard.
JMJ claimed to have gotten the hang of music production after Appietus recorded his demo song for him at KK Duah’s Case Frequency studio.
“I thought I would just record my demo and then move on to me being an artiste but I fell in love with the process of creating music so much that I ignored my singing. What really became the interest was being a part of the compostion,” he said.
Speaking about how he eventually secured a job as a music producer at Case Frequency, JMJ claimed that following the completion of his demo recording, he continued to visit the studio, prompting KK Duah to ask why he was always there. Later, once Appietus had left, he was hired there.
Almost two decades into his career, JMJ has produced music for a variety of artists, including Stonebwoy, Kaakie, Samini, Sarkodie, Obrafour, Ghetto KB, and Jah Lead.
