Effective 2nd April 2021 all MTN Mobile Money customers will be required to present valid ID cards before any transaction can be processed, MTN Ghana has announced.
As a result of this directive, all MoMo agents will required to select the ID type and enter the number presented by the customers before the transaction can be completed.
The Mobile Money Implementation Manager for MTN Western and Central Region David Nana Addai in an interview with ATL FM NEWS said the enforcement of this directive forms part of efforts taken by MTN to curb mobile money fraud in the country.
He disclosed that “technically on our system, we can only see that somebody entered the pin code and there is nothing more to it which does not help investigations. So what we are saying today is that aside the pin code, which is the first safety feature, we need the ID to authenticate who is going for that fund so that in the event where we have to investigate, we have something to fall on”.

Heurged all mobile money users to comply with the new directive to guarantee the security of all mobile money transactions.
“This directive is for a good purpose. To present your ID for cash out is to help us track transactions and curb fraud, petty theft and impersonations. We believe that if we are able to follow this to the latter, it will help curb all of this instances” he added.
