The Electoral Commission’s (EC) mop-up voter registration activity runs from today, August 1, until Saturday, August 3, 2024.
The three-day activity is intended to provide a chance for those who turned 18 after the recent limited voter registration and those who were unable to register earlier to have their names recorded in the voter register.
The EC aims to add 50,000 to 70,000 new voters to the electoral roll. It will take place in the EC’s 268 district offices, 26 public universities, and 41 prisons around the country.
Context
Between May 7 and 29, 2024, the EC conducted a limited voter registration drive. At the completion of the 23-day exercise, the EC had registered 778,447 voters, including 408,332 females (52.45%) and 370,115 men (47.55%).
Currently, the EC has 18, 681,366 provisional registered voters.
Modalities
The EC has also hired the services of Mobile Telecommunication Network (MTN) to provide consistent Internet access during the exercise, as registration will be done online.

A qualified applicant must provide a Ghana Card or a Ghana Passport as proof of eligibility at the specified registration location, and if none of the papers are available, two registered voters must serve as guarantors.
The EC indicated that guarantors may only guarantee for 10 voters, emphasizing that “those who guaranteed for 10 voters during the limited exercise cannot guarantee for another voter during the mop-up exercise.”
He stated that it was in compliance with Regulation 2 of CI 91, as revised by CI 126. During the three-day exercise, political parties were allowed to send operatives to registration centers to observe.
The EC further encouraged the parties to train their representatives to behave themselves properly in order to guarantee an incident-free exercise. It also asked parents and guardians not to allow their children under 18 to participate in the Mop-Up Voter Registration Exercise.
The registration centers will open at 7 a.m. and close at 6 p.m. each day.
