The Minority Caucus of the Health Committee of Parliament has condemned the Health Minister’s dismissal of the Chief Executive Officer of the Tamale Teaching Hospital, Dr. Adam Atiku.

The dismissal of the CEO of the Tamale Teaching Hospital follows the Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh’s surprise visit to the hospital in order to familiarize himself with the operations of the health facility. During the visit, Mr. Akandoh confronted a medical doctor over an allegation of medical negligence which led to the death of a patient at the hospital.

In a statement signed by the Ranking Member of the Health Committee of Parliament, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, the Caucus described the dismissal of Dr. Adam Atiku as one lacking procedural and substantive fairness.

The statement also called the Minister’s actions “unlawful”, “emotionally charged” and “rash”.

In the statement, the Minority pointed out that the Minister has no unilateral power to dismiss the CEO of a teaching hospital.

The Minority called for the reversal of the decision to dismiss Dr. Atiku and urged the Minister to issue a formal apology to the doctor he confronted, as well as to the hospital staff, for his unprofessional conduct during the visit.

The Minority also appealed to the Ghana Medical Association, civil society organizations (CSOs) and other health professional bodies, to “rise in defence of due process and institutional integrity.”

The statement concluded with an assurance by the Minority that all legal and parliamentary avenues will be explored to ensure that the matter is not overlooked.
