The Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission of Ghana, Martin Kwaku Ayisi says his outfit is considering issuing new guidelines to regulate movement and use of explosives.
He indicated though essential to the work of mining companies, these explosives must be strictly regulated.
On Thursday, 20th January 2022, a vehicle carrying explosives from Tarkwa to Chirano mines in the Western Region exploded destroying the entire community of Appiatse.
Mr. Ayisi notes going forward, it must be practically ensured that every mining company has a plant to avoid moving such explosives using public roads.
He said “Perhaps we have to issue new guidelines to reinforce the transportation as far as protecting the public is concerned. So, we will consider these and once we finish the report, we will discuss with the minister of Lands and Natural Resources and then issue the necessary guidelines or directives as to how to deal with this one to provide additional security to the public.”
With contradictory reports on the cause of the explosion, Mr. Ayisi said the Mexam Ghana Limited which was the conveyer of the explosive has been shut down and an investigation is currently on-going to probe into what actually happened.
