Beta testers can now access hands-free functionality for the AI app in Windows 11. Microsoft is testing a new feature for Copilot Voice that allows users to initiate conversations by saying “Hey, Copilot!” Windows Insiders with the updated app can try this feature after opting in and activating it.
While similar voice commands have been available for Siri, Google Assistant, Alexa, and Microsoft’s former Cortana, this is a new addition for Copilot. It follows the launch of a more conversational Copilot Voice experience.

According to a blog post, users need to enable the feature for it to respond to the wake word. The update is being rolled out gradually and is available to Insiders worldwide who have English set as their display language. To check if you have it, verify that your Copilot app version is 1.25051.10.0 or higher.
Once activated, a microphone icon will appear at the bottom of your screen, accompanied by a chime to indicate that Copilot is listening.
The FAQ states that the feature uses an on-device wake word spotter with a 10-second audio buffer and does not send audio clips to the cloud or save them locally. It can recognize the wake word offline, but internet access is required for the Copilot Voice feature to function effectively, as it relies on cloud processing capabilities.
