Meta announced on Tuesday the global launch of Edits, its video-creation app similar to CapCut. The app will enable creators to track video ideas, find inspiration, and craft videos using effects and AI tools, and is available on both iOS and Android.
All features of Edits will be free at launch, although Instagram head Adam Mosseri indicated that future versions may include paid options.
The company first revealed its work on Edits in January, following the temporary removal of ByteDance’s CapCut from U.S. app stores amid the TikTok ban. Although CapCut has returned, TikTok’s future in the U.S. remains uncertain, presenting an opportunity for Meta.
The launch aims to encourage creators to use Edits for all their short-form content, not just on Instagram or Facebook, but across platforms like TikTok and YouTube Shorts. Notably, Edits allows users to export videos without watermarks, unlike CapCut, which requires a paid subscription for that feature.

Key features of Edits include an “Ideas” tool for brainstorming video concepts, a “Projects” feature for managing creations, and an “Inspirations” tool for exploring trending audio. The app also includes a “Green Screen” feature for background replacement and a “Timeline” for organizing clips. Users can add automatic captions and music from Instagram’s library.
Additionally, the app’s “Animate” feature converts static images into videos, while the “Cutouts” feature tracks and isolates specific objects.
Once videos are completed, users can share them directly to Instagram or Facebook or export them for other platforms. Edits offers insights to help users enhance their content strategy and reach.
Meta has teased upcoming features, including a “Modify” tool for AI-driven video alterations and a “Keyframes” feature for precise adjustments. Future updates will also include more fonts, animations, transitions, voice effects, filters, sound effects, and music options.
