Ruoming Pang, Apple’s head of AI models, is leaving the company to join Meta, according to a Bloomberg report on Monday. This move adds to the roster of high-profile AI executives recruited by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg for his new AI superintelligence unit.
Pang previously led Apple’s in-house team responsible for training the AI foundation models that support Apple Intelligence and other on-device AI features. However, Apple’s AI models have not achieved significant success, lagging behind offerings from OpenAI, Anthropic, and even Meta. The company has reportedly considered using third-party AI models for its upcoming AI-enhanced Siri upgrade.

Sources told Bloomberg that Pang’s departure may signal more exits from Apple’s struggling AI division.
At Meta, Pang could leverage his expertise in designing compact, on-device AI models, joining a talent pool that includes leaders poached from Google DeepMind, OpenAI, and Safe Superintelligence.
