Megan Connolly Embraces New Horizons in Italy
Megan Connolly thrives in Serie A’s vibrant atmosphere as she continues a proud tradition of Irish women making their mark in Italian football. The legacy began with Anne O’Brien, who was a trailblazer in the late 1970s, winning a Scudetto with Lazio and later adding more titles with Trani, Reggiana, and Milan Salvarani. In recent times, names like Louise Quinn, Stephanie Roche, and Niamh Farrelly have followed that same path. Now, it’s Connolly’s turn to represent the Irish spirit on Italian soil, suiting up for Lazio.

Adapting to Life in Rome
Connolly’s journey has always been about stepping out of her comfort zone. From College Corinthians in Cork to college football in Florida, she’s never shied away from a new experience. Her move to Italy came after Bristol City’s relegation from the Women’s Super League, and despite the initial shock of adjusting to a new culture, she has no regrets. “It was a big change leaving England after six years, but I’ve come to love it,” she said. “The league, the football, Lazio—everything about it is just fantastic.”
Competitive Football and Derby Day Passion
Serie A Femminile has a unique structure, with the season split into two phases. While Lazio didn’t make the cut for the championship round, they dominated the relegation phase, comfortably finishing ahead of teams like Como, Sassuolo, Napoli, and Sampdoria. Megan has enjoyed the challenge, especially the passionate derby clashes against Roma. “You have grown men yelling at you from the stands—it was shocking but also fun,” she laughed. “It created an amazing atmosphere.”
Looking Ahead With Ireland
Although sidelined during April’s games against Greece, Connolly is eager to return to Ireland’s starting lineup for the final Nations League fixtures. Ireland must beat both Turkey and Slovenia to stay in the hunt for promotion to League A, which impacts their World Cup qualification. “They’re big games,” Connolly admitted. “We have to stay patient, trust the process, be solid at the back, and make it count.”
Confidence in the Future
Despite setbacks, Megan Connolly remains positive about both her club and international futures. With a new two-year contract at Lazio and strong ambitions with Ireland, she’s committed to pushing herself and her team forward—wherever the journey takes her.
