The Accra Circuit Court has convicted rapper Samuel Adu Frimpong, also known as Medikal.
After pleading guilty to the allegation of unauthorized public display of arms, the rapper was released.
Following the guilty plea, the court presided over by His Lordship Emmanuel Essandoh sentenced Medikal to 300 penalty units. This amounts to $3,600.
Meanwhile, if the rapper does not pay the fine, he will be imprisoned for nine months.
In September 2021, police detained the artist for flashing a gun in a video shared on social media. He was subsequently accused with illegally displaying arms and ammunition.
When Medikal first appeared in court, he pled not guilty to the charge, but the judge denied him bail.
The rapper was arrested and held in police custody for five days. On October 26, when he went to court, the adjudicator granted him $100,000 bail.
The case was then rescheduled until January 25, 2022.
Following his appearance in court, Medikal’s defense counsel asked the Circuit Court to return the musician’s Ruger 9mm handgun, which had been taken by the police after it was displayed on social media.
According to sources, the prosecution sought to contest Medikal’s guilty plea, telling the court that they were unaware the rapper would modify his not guilty plea.
However, the judge who disagreed with the police’s position said that the prosecution was not required to be informed.
