McIlroy and Scheffler Set for BMW Championship Showdown
Golf fans are in for a treat as the world’s top two players go head-to-head in the opening rounds of the BMW Championship. The PGA Tour has paired Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy together for the first two days at Caves Valley Golf Club in Maryland, with their first tee time set for 11:16am (4:16pm Irish time) on Thursday. Both men hold the top spots in the world rankings and the FedEx Cup standings as the season nears its climax.

Two Giants of the Season
Between them, Scheffler and McIlroy have captured three of the four major championships this year. Scheffler is the reigning FedEx Cup champion, while McIlroy has lifted the trophy three times in his career. When they last shared early-round tee times at the PGA Championship alongside Xander Schauffele, Scheffler produced a five-under-par performance en route to victory. McIlroy, however, battled to a one-over-par total and narrowly made the cut.
McIlroy’s Return to Action
This week’s event marks McIlroy’s first PGA Tour appearance since tying for seventh at the Open Championship, which Scheffler won. The Northern Irishman opted to skip the FedEx St Jude Championship, the opening leg of the playoffs, to prepare for this crucial week.
High Stakes for the FedEx Cup
Unlike regular PGA Tour events, the BMW Championship has no 36-hole cut. However, only the top 30 players in the points standings after Sunday will qualify for the Tour Championship next week. Shane Lowry begins the tournament ranked 23rd in the FedEx standings and will tee off at 3:27pm (Irish time) alongside Canadian Nick Taylor.
Notable Pairings and Players to Watch
Xander Schauffele, sitting 43rd after an injury-hit season, will need a strong finish to break into the top 30 and will start alongside Michael Kim. Other notable pairings include Rickie Fowler with Jhonattan Vegas—ranked 48th and 49th respectively—and Justin Rose with JJ Spaun. Rose recently defeated Spaun in a play-off at St Jude to move to third in the standings, with Spaun in fourth. Tommy Fleetwood, who narrowly missed that same play-off after a late bogey, will partner with Justin Thomas for the opening rounds.
