A Senior Lecturer at the Department of Mathematics of the University of Cape Coast, Dr. Stephen Moore says teachers’ use of aggressiveness in teaching mathematics in school put fear in the students.
He notes that mathematics is a patient science and teachers must use things that are easy for the student to break the barrier of difficulty in understanding the subject.
“There are innovative ways of making the teaching and learning of the subject very easy,” he said.
According to him, Mathematics is one of the relevant tools that can help promote industry growth in Ghana, and thus in teaching the subject, the teacher must relate the subject to the student for them to love studying the subject.
Dr. Moore, representing the Cape Coast Branch of the Ghana Science Association on ATL FM’s ATLANTIC WAVE on Tuesday noted that since mathematics is applicable in every setting, the use of the subject area to solve industry problems can help transform the country’s industries for the better.
To him, an avenue should be created to give the platform to mathematics scholars to discuss relevant issues toward solving problems.
He said “in Europe every year, certain companies meet together and invite mathematics professors, mathematics Ph.D. holders among others and they call it industrial mathematics meetings. So, the industries pose their problems and then the professors are split into groups of different areas and work with the industries directly…they take about a week or two just solving the problem and making sure that they go through the solution really critically, discussing it one on one with the company.”
Discussing the topic “Mathematics meets industry”, he said the time has come for a closer relationship between companies and mathematicians.
He hinted that companies deciding to tread on this tangent will help make giant strides in solving problems in the Ghanaians industries.
