The University of Cape Coast, UCC, has signed a Memoranda of Understanding with several universities in Africa aimed at delivering quality distance education beyond the shores of Ghana to other African nationals.

In that regard, the College of Distance Education (CoDE)-UCC is in the process of establishing a world-class e-learning studio to engage in technology-driven education for both local and international students.

“This will enable students to access their modules, engage in interactions with their facilitators and write quizzes and examinations in a virtual environment,” the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, has announced.

The Vice-Chancellor was addressing graduands during the 6th and 7th Sessions of the 55th Congregation ceremony, where a total of 2, 930 students of CoDE-UCC graduated with bachelor’s degrees and diplomas in various disciplines.

For the number, 64 students had First Class, 524 were in the Second Upper Division, 791 were in the Second Lower Division, 805 were awarded Third Class, whilst 746 had Pass.

At the 7th Session of the 55th Congregation Ceremony for graduands of CoDE, a total of 2,482 were presented for conferment of degrees and diplomas.

Of the number, 77  students had First Class, 469 Second Class Upper Division,  749 Second Class Lower Division, 605 Third Class and 582  Pass.

Awards for deserving students

Mr. Abraham Joseph Kwesi Bentil was adjudged the Overall Best Graduating Student and Valedictorian for the 6th  and 7th  Sessions of the 55th  Congregation.

The graduands were from Study Centres in Central, Greater Accra, Savannah, Upper West, North East, Northern and Upper West regions.

CoDE Service Charter

Prof. Boampong, who congratulated the graduands on their successful completion of their studies, disclosed that the College had commenced the implementation of a Service Charter to set timelines and deadlines for all major operations and documentations.

The Service Charter, according to the Vice-Chancellor, eliminates the traffic that applicants faced in their applications to get vital documents from the University.

Digitalisation of Modules

While admitting challenges in modules distribution to students, Prof. Boampong revealed that  CoDE had digitalised its modules to enable students access the soft copies of modules to ensure smooth academic calendar.

Training and Resource Centre to be inaugurated in June 2023

Speaking further, the Vice-Chancellor announced that the Training and Resource Centre at Agona Nyakrom in the Central Region will be commissioned in June 2023.

He added that the Study Centre at Dominase in the Ashanti region was near completion.

Achievement

The Vice-Chancellor named notable achievements chalked up by the University, including the membership status granted to the University by African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA)

Prof. Boampong mentioned the positions of UCC in the 2023 Times Higher Education ranking.

He told the graduands that the academic programmes offered by the University were reviewed periodically to ensure students acquired the requisite knowledge and skills needed in the competitive job market.

He expressed appreciation to module writers, chief examiners, facilitators, study centres coordinators and staff of the University for their selfless contributions to CoDE-UCC.

Advice to Graduands

Prof. Boampong reminded the graduands of the legacy of UCC, including integrity, quality and excellence.

“Wherever you find yourself, be aglow for God and the UCC,” he concluded his address to the graduands amid applause.

For his part, Most Rev.  Bishop Awortwi Pratt, who represented the Chairman of UCC Council, Prof. Obeng Mireku, advised the graduands to refrain from acts that would tarnish the image of the UCC.

He encouraged them to apply the knowledge and skills they had acquired in the University to serve society and entreated them to imbibe discipline in all their endeavours.
