A 33-year-old man from Shandong, China, has been exonerated after initially being sentenced to six months in prison for accepting compensation from his wife’s lover.
The case began in March 2021 when Lu, the man in question, noticed his wife was taking an unusually long time to get ready to take their daughter to her tutor. Suspecting something was wrong, he decided to follow her and observed her entering a local hotel.
Upon confronting her in the hotel room, Lu discovered his wife in skimpy underwear alongside a naked man, surnamed Liu. Enraged, Lu assaulted Liu and kicked his wife.
However, Liu quickly offered 25,000 yuan (about $3,300) in three online installments as compensation, which Lu accepted.

During divorce proceedings later that year, Lu was blindsided to learn that Liu had filed a complaint against him, accusing him of extortion.
Lu suspected his wife had orchestrated the complaint to gain leverage in their custody battle over their daughter.
In November 2021, a District Court found Lu guilty of blackmailing Liu and sentenced him to six months in prison.
Despite appealing the decision multiple times, both the Zibo Intermediate People’s Court and the Shandong Provincial High Court initially upheld the ruling.
However, earlier this year, after reexamining the case, the Zibo Intermediate Court overturned Lu’s sentence. The court concluded that Lu had not extorted Liu but had instead negotiated the compensation.
Moreover, the court ruled that Liu’s actions had violated public order and moral standards, and Lu’s response was deemed justified.
This case bears similarities to another recent incident in which a husband used hidden cameras to catch his wife cheating and was sentenced to three months in jail for unlawful surveillance.
