Social media users are praising Togbe Afede XIV, the Paramount Chief and Agbogbomefia of Asogli, for rejecting nearly GH¢365,000 ex-gratia for sitting on the Council of State between 2017 and 2020.

Netizens praised him for safeguarding the public purse and considering the country’s growth and development.

Men with integrity and love for God and country are taking their rightful place.

Togbe Afede his royal majesty, Take a bow. ♥️🙌

— SonOfaMafia👑 (@Sonofamafia) June 7, 2022

Togbe Afede XIV stated in a statement on Monday that receiving the “outrageous” amount was inappropriate because he already received monthly wages for participating on the Council.

He made these comments in response to public outrage about whether or not he followed through on his alleged refund and the reasoning behind it.

DIGNITY! 👌🏿

Former Council of State member, Togbe Afede XIV, rejects over GH₵ 365,000 "outrageous" ex-gratia for his 4-year service.

“I did not think the payment was made to trap me, as is being speculated.”

“I believe it was paid to everybody who served on the Council of State. However, I thought that extra payment was inappropriate for a short, effectively part-time work, for which I received a monthly salary and was entitled to other privileges. So, I was very uncomfortable with it,” he added.

As a result of this, social media is humming with praise for the traditional leader.

Togbe Afede Aso XIV has fixed the entire Council of State and exposed the greed inherent in these retirees who are still enjoying retirement benefits, plus allowances/salaries as members of the council and yet be paid billions of cedis as Ex Gratia for part time work.

Some argue that instead of refunding the money, he should have utilized it for other development initiatives in his traditional area.

Waiting to see/hear which politician to follow exactly what Togbe Afede XIV has done by returning the ex-gratia.

Ghana needs people like Togbe Afede to become a developed country instead of developing country!
Thank you sir!! https://t.co/3N6vmDMkRs

— SurajuDeen (@SurajIbrahim19) June 7, 2022

So Togbe Afede rejected such money from the government?
Couldn't he have used that to even build a school or CHIP Compound for his people than to reject it for the Akyem mafias to waste it? #TV3NewDay

This is one by far a cue to the rest of the chiefs in Ghana. That a true leader leads by example, Thank you Togbe Afede XIV for setting the tone: you didn't just reject the obnoxious ex gratia but exposing who a leader is! pic.twitter.com/KPAliT5XqD

Togbe Afede XIV is a National Asset and must be protected at all code. This are the things we expect some( most of course) of our leaders to do. A rope model to be studied.#Citicbs

All hail Togbe Afede XIV. Against all odds, we want to see the so called great Kings do same. God bless you with long life Togbe
