The Suhum Magistrate Court, presided over by Mrs Cynthia Blagoggee, fined Stephen Wortey GH1,200.00 or sentenced him to three months in jail with hard labor for running an insanitary latrine.
Wortey was charged with having a “dangerous insanitary pit latrine” on his land and failure to comply with a warning provided by Environmental Health Officers.
He pled guilty with an excuse, but his explanation was rejected by the judge, and he was fined as a result.
According to the prosecutor, Mr George Theophilus Agyalo, Senior Environmental Health Officer, the accused person lives in Amede, a farming village in the Suhum Municipality.
He claimed that during their routine checks, Environmental Health Inspectors headed by Mr Joe Gyato and Mr Isaac Yeboah inspected the accused person’s premises and discovered an insanitary pit latrine.
The monitoring team gave him two days to abate and send in inspectors for a re-inspection. However, he did not follow the order.
He said that the resulting mess could be hazardous to the wellbeing of users and passers-by, as well as children in the neighborhood, since it could collapse at any moment.

He reported that the latrine had become a death trap, as well as a breeding ground for disease vectors that spread diarrhoea, cholera, and other diseases.
As a result, the perpetrator was given a warrant to appear in court, which resulted in his arrest.
