Anthony Nsiah Asare, the Presidential Advisor on Health, said the administration is presently exploring methods to control the COVID-19 epidemic in Ghana before reopening land borders.
Mr. Nsiah Asare stated that the bulk of the population would need to be vaccinated before land borders could be reopened.
“We are looking at the data, we are looking at the science and everything that is happening. The President is more concerned about the economic devastation brought by the pandemic.”
“The way to curb this pandemic, apart from the protocols is to ensure that a lot of people are immunized. Once you get a lot of people vaccinated it means the vulnerable people in the country become less and no amount of importation will cause a devastating effect,” said Nsiah Asare.
Residents of Ketu South in the Volta Region and Elubo in the Western Region have rallied to demand that land borders be reopened.
Residents of Elubo, like those of Aflao, have complained that the continual closing of land borders is harming their livelihoods.
There have been allegations that some people have cheated the system by avoiding restrictions at land borders.
Mr. Nsiah Asare criticized the conduct, stating, “If people are paying and moving illegally, I am not aware of it, but if this is true, it is bad and we should all condemn it.”
As part of measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, President Nana Akufo-Addo ordered the closing of the country’s borders in March 2020.
The land borders have only been allowing the passage of cargo.
According to Presidency officials, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo would shortly make a decision on the country’s current border closure after discussions with the COVID-19 National Response Team.
