On Tuesday, June 25, Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin accused the Minority in Parliament of obstructing the proposed Free SHS bill.
According to him, enacting a law is necessary to regulate the Free SHS policy, which is currently in operation.
Addressing journalists, the Effutu MP pointed to Akatsi North MP Peter Kwasi Nortsu-Kotoe as a vocal opponent of the bill, which aims to formalize the Free SHS policy into law for consistent implementation across governments.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin emphasized the Minority’s alleged efforts to hinder the bill’s approval, citing the NDC’s opposition through a speech by their ranking member.
He called on the Minority to make it clear to Ghanaians that the Free SHS policy is not their priority as a responsible opposition.
Expressing readiness to advance the bill, Mr. Afenyo-Markin mentioned that Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum would present it to Parliament.
He criticized the Minority’s adamancy, claiming they have been unyielding in discussions despite engagement. He therefore called on the Minority to give reasons for their opposition to the bill.
“The NDC is not ready for the Free SHS bill. It is clear and their spokesperson on Education has been very loud…. He says he is opposed to the bill because there is some provision in the constitution,” Mr. Afenyo-Markin asserted, urging the Minority to clarify their objections transparently.
Meanwhile, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Minority had previously refuted assertions of opposition to the proposed Free SHS bill, maintaining their position amidst ongoing parliamentary discussions.
