The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama says he will appoint less than 60 ministers who will not be entitled to ex-gratia if he wins the 2024 general elections.
To him, it will be a betrayal of the people for a leader to persist in ineffective practices that leave them poorer.
As such he has committed himself to maintaining a lean government structure so as not to repeat the mistakes of the current government.
“Our nation is currently facing significant challenges, burdened with crippling debt and an inefficient, wasteful government. We cannot continue on this path,” he stressed.
Mahama’s belief is that a lean government structure is necessary to address the challenges facing the country.
The former president of Ghana said this while delivering his acceptance speech at the University for Development Studies (UDS) in Tamale after his landslide win in the NDC presidential and parliamentary primaries on Saturday, May 13, 2023.
While pledging his commitment and dedication to establishing an efficient government with not more than sixty ministers, he added saying “These ministers and other government appointees will voluntarily relinquish their entitlement to ex-gratia payments upon the completion of their tenure, even before the necessary constitutional amendments, including a review of the contentious Article 71.”
