President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his commitment to ensuring that the Atta-Mills Library complex Cape Coast is restored and put to use.
President Mahama made this assurance at the wreath-laying ceremony held in commemoration of the 13th anniversary of the passing of President John Evans Fiifi Atta-Mills. His firm promise was made after sister of the late President Mills, Madam Mercy Araba Ahema Quarshie appealed to President Maham to restore the library, which has remained unoccupied since its establishment.
President Mahama – who served as President Mills’ Vice President until his demise – confirmed that plans are already underway to restore the facility.
“I can tell you that Kofi Totobi Quakyi and a small group are already working on bringing that memorial library back to the shape in which it should be and we can be sure that we will let it achieve the objective for which it was set up.”, Mahama assured.
Mahama, who served as Atta Mills’ Vice President, delivered a heartfelt tribute that framed the late president’s leadership as a moral compass still needed in today’s political climate.
“He never allowed power to change who he was. He remained until his last breath a servant of the people, a man of peace, a man of God.”
Describing Mills as “a rare breed of leader” who championed discipline, truth, and fairness, Mahama called on Ghanaians to honour his memory not just with ceremonies, but by upholding the values he stood for.
“It is not enough for us to sing his praises in death The most authentic tribute from Sir John Atta Mills is to carry forward the values that he held dear is to rekindle the spirit of humility and accountability. Rekindle the spirit of ethical leadership that he exemplified,” Mahama emphasized.
He also tied the NDC’s current reset agenda directly to the foundations laid by President Mills under the “Better Ghana Agenda,” noting that it continues to inspire the party’s direction and development policies.
“No challenge is insurmountable when we lead with integrity… It is that lesson that I strive to follow,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Madam Mercy Araba Ahema Quarshie also expressed deep gratitude to the NDC leadership for their unwavering support over the years.
As the nation paused to reflect at Asomdwee Park, the mood was one of solemn gratitude and hopeful recommitment to the ideals of a president many remember as “The Asomdweehen”—King of Peace.
The late President John Evans Atta Mills, who passed on July 24 2012, was the first sitting Ghanaian president to die in office. His legacy remains a central symbol of peaceful, ethical leadership in Ghana’s political history.
As Ghana marks the 13th anniversary of the passing of the late President John Evans Atta Mills, poignant tributes from family and political leaders have reignited national reflection on his enduring legacy of peace, humility, and principled leadership.
