In his capacity as Commander-In-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, President John Dramani Mahama has announced the promotion of senior military officers to lead the country’s defence architecture, ahead of the formal handover by the outgoing Armed Forces administration.
The promotions, made in consultation with the Armed Forces Council and the Council of State, took effect on Monday, March 24, 2025, and reflect the government’s commitment to a seamless transition of command within the Ghana Armed Forces.
Major General William Agyapong has been promoted to serve as Chief of the Defence Staff, while Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu assumes the role of Chief of Army Staff.
Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing has been named Chief of Naval Staff, with Air Vice Marshal Eric Agyen-Frempong appointed as Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Joshua Lartei Mensah-Larkai will serve as Chief of Staff at the General Headquarters.
In a statement issued by Presidential Spokesperson and Minister for Government Communications, Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, President Mahama extended his best wishes to the newly appointed chiefs.
He urged them to serve with “patriotic courage” and to work together as a united front in safeguarding Ghana’s peace, stability, and territorial integrity.
“These appointments reaffirm the administration’s dedication to ensuring continuity, professionalism, and strategic leadership within our Armed Forces,” the statement read.
The new leadership team is expected to steer ongoing reforms within the military and uphold the Armed Forces’ reputation as a disciplined and loyal institution.
