John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of Ghana’s opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has unveiled plans to prioritize comprehensive solutions aimed at ensuring accessible and sustainable housing options for all Ghanaians.
Mr. Mahama also announced his intent to advocate within parliament, urging the Minority Group to prioritize advancing the Rent Control Bill.
This legislation he says is crucial to protect tenants by limiting landlords from demanding more than one year’s rent in advance, a measure that would benefit approximately 19 million renters across Ghana.
In a meeting with executives of the National Tenants Union, the former president highlighted the pressing need for housing that his administration aims to tackle.
According to him, his strategy emphasizes the creation of low-cost housing options targeted at nurses, teachers, civil servants, doctors, and other individuals with stable incomes.
This initiative he says aims to ensure that housing remains accessible to all, particularly those currently priced out by housing options that claim affordability but are beyond the means of many.
Speaking from personal experience both as a tenant and as a supporter of individuals struggling with rent payments, Mr. Mahama assured attendees of his steadfast dedication stating “My commitment to resolving these issues is integral to my presidential legacy and reflects my belief in a brighter future for housing in Ghana under the leadership of the NDC.”
Overall, Mahama affirmed that housing is a critical national priority, pledging that his administration, if elected, will prioritize comprehensive solutions to ensure accessible and sustainable housing options for all Ghanaians.
