President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to transforming Ghana’s road infrastructure through the ambitious “Big Push” initiative, which he says will ensure equitable development across all 16 regions of the country.
Speaking at the official sod-cutting ceremony for the initiative in Accra on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, President Mahama disclosed that since assuming office on January 7, his administration has been carefully packaging and designing road projects that will span the length and breadth of Ghana.
“The Big Push touches all the 16 regions of the country. Every region will benefit from its share of the Big Push,” he said.
Outlining the criteria for selecting projects under the initiative, the President explained that priority will be given to roads that enhance regional connectivity, noting “Our first priority is to construct roads that connect one regional capital to another.”
He further noted that the second phase of the initiative will focus on linking district capitals, while the third will target roads in food-producing, industrial, and manufacturing areas to facilitate trade and economic growth.
“Our second priority is to connect one district to another, ensuring good road networks between district capitals. The third priority is to open up food-producing areas and industrial and manufacturing zones so they are well linked to markets and processing centers,” President Mahama explained.
The President added that the sod-cutting was the first of several, with similar ceremonies expected to take place in five different locations across the country.
