In a strategic move to reinforce Ghana’s defense leadership, President John Dramani Mahama has appointed new Acting Service Chiefs for the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), effective March 24, 2025.
The shake-up comes as part of a broader effort to restructure the command of the armed forces and strengthen national security amid growing regional and global security challenges.
The appointments are pending consultation with the Council of State, in accordance with Ghana’s constitutional provisions.
The newly designated Acting Service Chiefs are:
Acting Chief of the Defense Staff – Brigadier General William Agyapong
Acting Chief of Army Staff – Brigadier General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu
Acting Chief of Naval Staff – Commodore Godwin Livinus Bessing
Acting Chief of Air Staff – Air Commodore Eric Agyen-Frempong
Acting Chief of Staff at the General Headquarters – Brigadier General Glover Ashong Annan
During a meeting with the outgoing leadership at the Flagstaff House, President Mahama praised their dedicated service to Ghana’s defense and development, extending special recognition to the outgoing Chief of the Defense Staff, General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, for his leadership during challenging times.
“The outgoing Chiefs have served this country with distinction. Their commitment to duty and national peace is highly appreciated, and I thank them sincerely for their sacrifice,” President Mahama said.
In a statement issued by the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the President emphasized that the appointments mark a new chapter in Ghana’s security apparatus, driven by performance, adaptability, and the need to prepare the military for emerging threats.
“These appointments are not only transitional but strategic. The new leadership is expected to inject fresh energy and uphold the tradition of excellence within the Ghana Armed Forces,” the statement read.
The reshuffle also comes at a time when Ghana is taking steps to deepen regional defense collaboration and strengthen its internal counterterrorism strategy.
