President John Dramani Mahama has strongly criticized the previous administration led by former President Nana Akufo-Addo, accusing it of reckless and criminal mismanagement of the economy.
Speaking at the National Tripartite Committee meeting at the Ministry of Labor, Jobs, and Employment, he described Ghana’s current economic state as a “crime scene.”
“We all knew the economy was in crisis, but some of the things I am uncovering myself have been a criminal mishandling of our economy. Ghana is now a crime scene,” President Mahama stated.
The meeting, which saw the government announce a 10% increase in base pay for public sector workers effective January 2025, provided a platform for the President to address Ghana’s economic challenges.
He assured labor leaders of his administration’s commitment to fiscal discipline and shared sacrifice.
“I think this distrust of the political class has arisen because when everybody else is tightening their belt, the political class is loosening its belt. But I want to assure you that we are all going to tighten our belts, and there will be no wasteful expenditure,” he said.
President Mahama emphasized the need for unity in navigating the crisis, urging Ghanaians to temper their expectations as the government implements corrective measures.
“Right now, the meal is not only insufficient, the cooking pot is even leaking,” he remarked, calling for patience and cooperation.
As part of his government’s reforms, President Mahama proposed the establishment of an independent emoluments committee to determine salaries across all sectors, including those of government officials.
“We are prepared to walk this journey with you. If we have an independent emoluments committee and you suggest 35%, I will support you because it will affect my pay too,” he assured workers.
President Mahama reaffirmed his government’s commitment to economic recovery, promising targeted policies to reduce inflation and stimulate growth.
“Once the economy moves in the right direction, we will ensure that when the cake is bigger, we all get a fair share,” he concluded.
